Features And Accessories Of The LG Ally

The newly released LG Ally smart phone has an undecided IQ. The Ally's great software and fantastic features awkwardly come together with mid-level elements and design. And at $100, the price seems too high to be termed “a steal.” But even then, with all its quirks and idiosyncrasies, the LG Ally is a welcome addition to Verizon’s line of Android smart phones.

Like Augustine’s bout with celibacy, LG's new Ally doesn't seem to know how to make up its mind. A plain black design contrasts with slight chrome accents, and the remarkable screen and software clash with a sluggish processor and a mediocre camera. As being part of an offer by Verizon Wireless, with a 2-year contract, the LG Ally will run you $100. Alternative plans are $169 for one year or $370 for a month-to-month plan. LG calls it a “superphone,” but most reviewers’ place it in the “midrange smart phone” arena due to its confusing mix of features. But perhaps its motley hodge-podge of functions and features may be just the thing for the mid-level smart phone customer.

This lightweight, 5.57oz midrange smart phone comes in a very sleek and simple black design with a 3.2-inch image display. The touch screen feels slightly “plastic” but solid, and has a fabulous resolution of 800x480. Images are remarkably clear and defined. The phone is a square shape and is heavy, emphasizing functionality over finesse. Along the side of the phone is a MicroSD slot with a 4GB SD card pre-installed and a headphone jack. Located at the bottom of the phone is the main physical key row, with End, Menu, Home and Answer buttons. Just above them are two digital buttons for Search and Back. Sliding open the LG Ally reveals a pristine QWERTY keyboard, ranked by experts as “top-notch” and “incredible.” In short, the overall design of the LG Ally is unique, using a combination of plainness and technophile gadgetry.

The Ally runs on the renowned Android 2.1 OS. Some pundits suspect the software may be slightly skinned, but so far no adverse side effects have been noticed. The only noticeable additions are basic LG visual themes. Phone features include LG Socialite, WiFi, Skype Mobile, Gmail, Google Maps, Text-to-Speech and a full Android application market with over 30,000 applications. The LG Ally also boasts a decent 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and Macro mode. It works well in most situations, but under extreme lighting conditions shots may turn out blurry and undefined. The music player is quite loud but has a hint of static. All these useful features use a tremendous level of energy, soaking it from the LG Ally battery. Most users comment that the battery only lasts from eight hours to two days at maximum. The 600MHz processor also gets similarly mixed reviews. Some users rant that merely sliding the phone slows down applications, while others rave over its fantastic multimedia capabilities.

LG Ally accessories
include the aesthetic and the functional. LG Ally holster, side pouches and covers are quite popular, most as business-like and demure as the Ally itself. For the on-the-go businessperson, accessories include Bluetooth headsets, portables stereo systems and headphones. And finally, for the technophile, the Ally offers micro USB travel and wall chargers, extended LG Ally batteries with accompanying cases, cable adapters and memory cards.

But perhaps the Ally’s oddities are not flaws, but merely quirks. There are several customers who would choose a simple looking phone over a flashy looking one. Some people already have superb cameras and do not need or want one on their phones. And not every phone user wants a lightweight paperweight; some enjoy the feeling of a solid phone in their hands. The LG Ally may not be able to claim an IQ of 170, but it is definitely a smart phone.

Can a Verizon wireless usb modem be hooked up to a router?

Not directly, unless you have a special router like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875997433&Tpk=mobile%20internet%20router
But you CAN do it indirectly. Instructions here: http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Your-Mobile-Broadband-Connection-Card-for-Your-Wireless-Router
