The Beatles in Stereo on USB
The Beatles are one of the few bands who have never made their music available to be bought as mp3 downloads on AmazonMP3 or iTunes. At this point I'm not sure that any other major label band hasn't done it. When the news came that in December of this year The Beatles music was finally coming out as mp3s most fans probably guessed that this meant that their music was going to be available but that is not true, instead The Beatles USB will contain The Beatles entire 1960s stereo catalog.
The Beatles USB memory stick contains the remastered Beatles in Stereo CD box set except obviously in a much different format than 16 CDs and 1 DVD. This one USB memory stick that you can hold in the palm of your hand contains all of the same elements as that stereo box set.
In actuality it contains all of the Beatles stereo remasters in the box set twice because it holds 320kbps mp3s and 44.1kHz/24bit FLAC files. I am certain you are familiar with mp3s (320kbps mp3s are of very high quality) but what about the 24bit FLAC files, what are they all about? Essentially these FLAC files are considered to be "lossless" which means there is not a loss of sound quality like with mp3s or other "lossy" formats. And because these FLACs are 24bit instead of the 16bit files that are on compact discs, they are actually of better quality than CDs.
This means that The Beatles USB includes the best quality versions of The Beatles stereo remasters! That may change in the future if they decide to release these remasters on Blu-Ray or DVD but for now this is the big cheese for audiophiles as far as The Beatles remasters.
How about the mono mixes? They are not contained on this USB memory stick. You still must get The Beatles Mono Box Set to hear the mono mixes.
Amoeba Modular USB Drive keeps private things private (Popgadget)
This is a clever concept from designer Hyunsoo Song, which is basically a USB
stick with a number of different modules. The idea is that people use their
USB drives to store all kinds of things and sometimes there may be private or
sensitive data on there you don't want anyone else to see. However, in offices
many people end up borrowing them and passing them between colleagues, so this
way you can keep your private content private on the first module and still
give your friend a USB drive to use if they've misplaced theirs by snapping
off a different section! Genius.
