Optical Fiber Network: Its Definition And Devices
Optical fiber network, as it is called, is a network of fiber optic cables in which data travels on hair-like strands of fiber at the speed of light. Today, through a fiber optic network, many ISPs, corporate offices, LANs and even home networks are connected. This kind of network provides a much higher bandwidth and faster data transfer capacity, even though it's very costly.
Fiber optic technology uses fiber optic cables for telecommunications networks and Local Area Networks (LAN). The cables are composed of bundles or strands of extremely thin fibers that provide a large bandwidth. In contrast to regular copper cables, the prices of the fiber optic cables and its installation can be much higher, but it is less vulnerable to outer interference like electromagnetic signals.
Fiber optics also provides solutions for the enterprise networking like NAS (network attached storage) and SAN (storage area network). A NAS is a server that is utilized to share data in a network, permitting more hard disk storage space to be added to a network. A NAS device doesn't have to be connected to the server directly andcan be placed anywhere in the network. It can be composed of two or more NAS and can be accessed from anywhere in the LAN. On the other hand, SAN is a subnet of the shared storage devices in a LAN or a WAN. In the NAS' and SAN's performances, fiber optics provides more efficacy and dependability by offering more bandwidth and data capacity in a LAN or WAN.
Fiber optic devices are used in several ways such as networking, industrial, medical, defense, broadcasting, and telecommunications systems. These devices are fiber optic connectors, optical testers, attenuators, optical switches, and optical routers. The fiber optic connectors are utilized to connect a fiber with another fiber or device. They come in different types such as SMA, FC, and SC connectors. The optical testers are designed for a variety of measurements and tests with a single meter. Then there are attenuators which are created for single mode applications, multimode applications and for attenuation settings. Optical switch is a handheld device for calibration sets and measurements automation while optical routers connect twisted pair LONWORK notes to the fiber optic backbone or subnets. The latter also re-routes the data automatically due to power failure or fiber break.
In the fiber optic network, fiber optic cables act as the backbone when different ISPs are connected with each other, in case any breakdown would result in a very large communication failure. Today, a number of communication networks depend on fiber optics. In the near future, fiber optic cables will replace the traditional coaxial and Ethernet cables, in favor of fiber optics such as 1000base sx and 1000base GBIC for the LAN networking. It's never too late that you must convert to a fiber optic network for optimum efficacy and swifter data transmission too.
