Hewlett-Packard's fourth-quarter earnings beat analysts' predictions and point
to a possible upswing as the company looks to make a fresh start next year.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company's revenue fell three percent in the
quarter ending October 31, to slightly over $32 billion. But results still
beat analyst estimates, and may hint at cautious optimism for HP in the coming
year under the leadership of its recently appointed CEO, Meg Whitman.
Whitman said HP needs to "get back to the business fundamentals in fiscal
2012," hinting at the company's plan to establish a presence in the mobile
device market without leaving behind the business basics that established its
success.
Last month, HP announced it would not be carrying out former CEO Leo
Apotheker's plan to spin off the PC division, choosing to hang onto the
business branch that defines its portfolio and brand. HP's computers remain at
the top of the PC market, although overall PC sales are slipping as people
