Photomount or Digitally Printed Holiday Photo Cards? The Controversy Persists
With the ease of digital photography and improvements in offset printing, this season quite a few families plan to digitally impress family photographs on their yearly holiday card. What could possibly be simpler? Just upload your photo to an online printing company, pick a design template, edit your photo, click the print button and your printed holiday greeting cards will be shipped to your residence.
This sounds like an idyllic scenario, but photography professionals unwaveringly insist that digitally-printed holiday photo cards are not nearly as captivating as photographs mounted on the greeting card. One seasoned stationer and recreational photographer said, “Digitally reproduced holiday photo cards simply don't have the quality and print image resolution of photographs developed by a commercial printer. Some digital Christmas photo cards may be appealing, but when you compare them side-by-side, the actual difference is apparent: Photomount greeting cards win hands-down.”
Not everybody would accept this assessment, but certainly if you consider the “convenience factor” and lower overall cost, it's no big surprise to anyone that customers have migrated in the direction of digital holiday cards. “Let’s face it,” said this seasoned stationer, “you are getting a nice quality photo card - perhaps not the most impressive - however, you avoid the hassle of mounting the photographs with adhesive tape.”
Given this change in consumer purchasing behavior, leading printing companies have shifted quickly to increase their digital printing abilities. The truth is, industry leaders, Crane & Co. and William Arthur now provide its buyers the choice of imprinting their picture upon the holiday photo card or mounting their photographs on beautifully designed cards - often engraved - with pre-applied adhesive tape.
To see the variations in both printing techniques, it's wise to go to a qualified stationery store in your neighborhood and see printed samples in person. Whatever option works for you, a variety of printing companies are in the middle of their holiday card sale. Save anywhere for 20% to 50% by buying your photo greeting cards before the end of September.
