How It Can Be Dangerous To Keep Data On A Memory Card
I found out the hard way last week about the dangers of keeping photos on a memory card. I am shame faced enough to admit that I had been warned about this previously but I did not follow the advice I was given. But I have now paid the price for ignoring this advice because my memory card became corrupted last week and now over a thousand precious photos have been lost forever. What's making this even worse is the fact that the few people I have spoken to about this seem to think that the photographs are gone and that there is no way of getting them back.
This has been a very upsetting episode for me and the worst thing is that it is my own entire fault. Among the photographs I have lost were precious memories of birthday parties for my children, a number of foreign holidays and some weekend trips away in the UK. We actually had a dream holiday last year in Cancun in Mexico and every single photograph of that amazing trip was stored on that memory card. Even though I was planning to print those photos out, I was waiting and waiting and never did it. One of the worst things of all is the fact that photos of my children growing up are gone now forever. My wife had been bugging me for ages to sort these photos out but I just never did it and now as you can imagine she is livid with me.
I am now telling everyone I can about the dangers of these memory cards. These devices can and do malfunction. One of our friends, who know about these things, explained to me that all memory cards will eventually become corrupt; it is just a matter of time. The advice is to store photos on the computer and back them up somewhere else as well. I paid the price for storing my photos on a memory card long term and it is not something that I would want others to go through. It is just a pity that I had to lose so much in order to learn this lesson.
Memory Cards can be found in countless products nowadays. R4 cards happen to be a great example of this. Another one that is used nowadays is the R4i.
